Spanning three decades and three continents of archival material, Language of Movement is Milad Mozari’s ongoing conversation with Ghaffar Pourazar, an Azerbaijani-Iranian computer animator turned Beijing Opera performer. The materials presented are layers of media collected in Pourazar’s life and transported by Mozari from Pourazar’s old apartment in Beijing. They point to Pourazar’s desire to learn Beijing Opera without knowing the language, where he feverously documented learning the art form. This collection is interpolated with family trips and events, where movement is documented in a similar format.

Born in Iran, Ghaffar Pourazar immigrated to the United Kingdom at 13 to attend boarding school in Cambridge, later becoming a professor in mime and animation at the BRIT School for the Performing Arts &#38;amp; Technology. In the summer of 1993, Pourazar saw the Peking Opera, “The Little Phoenix,” at the London International Festival of Theatre, which altered his life trajectory. The performance by the Beijing Jing Ju Troupe moved him so much that he abruptly quit his teaching post and moved to Beijing at 33.

Pourazar spent the next ten years of his life studying Peking Opera and training until his abilities awarded him a limited-speaking role of the Monkey King, which he performs to this day. Pourazar’s uncanny ability to navigate between Western, Eastern, and Middle Eastern cultures, coupled with his arduous search to find authenticity in movement are now veiled by his character’s gold suit and facial makeup.

Through the lens of Pourazar’s background as a computer animator and spatial and surveillance tools, the exhibition looks at the potential of the Sino-Persian as a digital archive. Where conversations between analog and digital challenge the notion of the archive, memory, and place. The work does not try to preserve the art form; instead, it nods to his past as it relates to creativity being boundless.

Composition, performance and vinyl record (Wendover, Utah/ Online)
Conducted as a night of performances during the pandemic, the work enlisted a series of performances in response to the built and natural environment. At the center, was the work done at Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels and nearby landscape. As a sound performance, the impulse response of the cylindrical shapes was applied to data sonification of air quality data as well as the human voice. Alongside this improvisation, a video of archival photos from the surrounding area was manipulated through a generative adversial network program to create new and imaginary landscapes of Utah’s desert area.
Performance and vinyl record in collaboration with Mitsu Salmon, Ji Park, Guillame Rousere, Lin Yu Nong, Jackson Kerbs, David Onwukeme, Digital Matters at Marriott Library and Experimental Soud Studio.
Lathe cut lenticular print 10 inch record from performance with comments on Twitch platform sung in live time of performance by William Salmon.

Echoes in Botany (2019)In collaboration with Mitsu Salmon &#38;nbsp;
Performance and Installation (Madou, Taiwan)&#38;nbsp;
Echoes of Botany is a site-specific sound and movement performance that reflects on the trees, plants, and architecture of Tsung Yeh.&#38;nbsp; In response to late 19th-century human-driven migrations of plants both in Taiwan and North America, the work responds to the attempts and failures of "tropical paradise" created during the industrial age. The piece roves around the Chief's house, which was the family residence of the Meiji sugar cane factory chief in Madou during the Japanese colonial period. The work confronts ideas around native, imported and exported plants, speaking to the transports of plants as connected to the movement of culture, commerce, ideas, and diaspora. Sound, technology, voice, dance, and audience interaction are interwoven to investigate these plants and humans role as connected to the layered history of Madou. Performers engage with their environment and architecture, fluctuating between being plants and human. Through three tableaux, the performers speak to human relationship to plants in linking the growth, cataloging, and travel of plants as connected to bodies and history of the various spaces.

Illusive Waves: Breathing Underwater (2019)&#38;nbsp;
In collaboration with Mitsu Salmon&#38;nbsp;
Installation and Performance at Incheon Art Platform (Incheon, South Korea)&#38;nbsp;Illusive Waves: Breathing Underwater is an exhibition and performance at Incheon Art Platfrom (March- May 2019).&#38;nbsp; Speculating on Incheon’s history as a place of transit from its various ports, the installation depicts an illusive underwater trading network. In the 1800s before Jemulpo port was built, Korea was closed off to international trade. But below the ocean’s surface, a matriarchy of merchants worked trading underwater. Their stories are presented through speculative archives that speak to the past’s developments as related to contemporary inquiries. For example, the trade will exist not above water in boats but below in the water. What are the devices which allow people to breathe underwater? How is breathing while submerged a metaphor for the 19th-century industrialization and its environmental impact? How does a group of women merchants become a powerful force during this time?

The exhibition displays constructed artifacts, drawings and a multi-media installation from this imagined underwater workforce next to the Jemulpo Port. The piece interweaves the real with the imagined, as a way to both challenges how history is seen as objective as well as to expand upon the fantastical possibilities of this past.

		<description>Mt. Shamao (2018)
In collaboration with Mitsu Salmon
Installation and performance at Lincoln Park Conservatory (Chicago, Illinois)&#38;nbsp;

Mt. Shamao is a site-responsive installation inhabiting Lincoln Park’s Fern Room. The work looks at man-made tropical paradises as connected to archives, importation, and utopias.

The installation was developed through research in Taiwan at the Forestry Research Institute and drawing historical and metaphorical lines back to Lincoln Park Conservatory's past and present. Ryozo Kanehira, Salmon’s great-grandfather was head of the Taipei Botanical Gardens in the early 1900s. Kanehira was a well-known botanist from Japan, who did extensive work in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation. In the same period, Chicago created five botanical conservatories (including the Lincoln Park) which were displays of wealth and imperialism much like the botanical ventures by the Japanese in Taiwan.

Playing with these parallel histories, the collaboration create a visual and sonic reflection that draw from the past archives and collected data of the two environments today. &#38;nbsp;
For the performance,&#38;nbsp;Movement and tableau take over the room, choreography which alludes to the study of plants, the growth pattern of trees, and the disconnectedness of displaced plants. Through the structure of a tour, performance-movement, and data-driven sounds collected over the course of the installation, Milad Mozari and Mitsu Salmon work with an ensemble in contemporary dance, Butoh and breakdancing.

		<description>

Standing Nymph and Man (2017)&#38;nbsp;A hybrid video project based on the ornamental and sonic history of the Fine Arts Building and the Studebaker Theater.

In the film Standing Nymph with Man, the Fine Arts Building in Chicago is the protagonist rather than the subject. Originally designed by Spencer Beman in 1884 as a soundproof structure for the Studebaker Company (horse carts and automobiles), the building has for many years been home to artists' studios and services for classical music. This sonic history and presence is constantly evoked in the film's soundtrack, which brings to the forefront the reverberant acoustic qualities of the building. Another invisible yet audible presence is the occasional voice of the building's cleaning woman who relates her personal encounters with the building. Her voice is in counterpoint to the elevator operator's whistling, a leitmotif in the soundtrack that we hear only in reflection, since we only ever see him from behind. This insistence on an invisible yet highly palpable acousmatic presence creates a rich sonic world that embraces the film's visual mixture of live action footage and LIDAR animation. These visual techniques focus on the details of both the surfaces of the building's interiors and its three-dimensional forms, tying the intimate upper floors to the first-floor theater, uniting surface, volume, material, reverberation, and resonance, and articulating historical traces that surpass subjects or authors. Anonymity, in fact, permeates both the building and the film, from the anonymous painting that gives the film its title, to the cleaning woman who chooses to remain anonymous in the film's making, to the numerous lesser known musicians practicing their craft in private behind closed doors that nonetheless allow the seepage of their intermingling music into the resonant hallways of the building.

Resonant Traces (2018)
In colloaboration with Mitsu Salmon
Multimedia installation (collected objects, radio transmitter and acrylic)&#38;nbsp;
The installation as space is a convergence of objects (present and non-present), and their shadows that are illuminated through video. Through the interaction with the objects, images and sounds specific to the history of botany, family history, and its complexities, the audience is immersed in the shadows of the installation, and hence the archive. The color space of the room, which the shadows are simulated through green screen video, change color which draws parallels to the history of the items such as white for orchids, red for fire, blue for cyanotypes and orange for sunrise and sunset.&#38;nbsp;Taking form as an installation, the prominent collected materials and images were generously loaned from the Taipei Botanical Gardens and the Taiwan Forestry Institute, which Salmon’s great-grandfather founded. The installation was developed and supported by the Taipei Artist Village in Taipei, Taiwan. Written by Hsiang-Wen Chen
The project in Taiwan of artist group Mitsu Salmon and Milad Mozari was inspired by Mitsu’s great-grandfather Ryozo Kanehira, who was one of the prominent botanists in Taiwan during the Japanese Reign. Ryozo Kanehira once served as the head of the Forestry Department at the Central Research Institute of Taiwan Governor-General and traveled on several occasions to Nanyang (Malay archipelago) for inspection. Ryozo Kanehira introduced rainforest species into Taiwan and constructed a foundation for forestry research in Taiwan; he also expanded the displays of the Herbarium at the Forestry Department (currently the Herbarium of Taiwan Forestry Research Institute). Using different media, the artists refer to Mitsu’s personal family history and the developmental history of Taiwan, Japan and Nanyang, creating works that not only connect to personal memories but also the broader social and historical context. The combination of projection, sound, and objects represents the multiple layers of history while the lighting enables interaction between reality and the virtuality. As visitors enter the exhibition space, their shadows also become part of the work. This work expands closed personal memories into a platform that allows conversations.

Noise Workshop for Protégés (2015)
Paper, balloons, electronics and software

In this workshop, the notion of music and sound is explored through demonstration and group participation. There is an introduction to basic concepts of sound and music through a selection of objects and microphones to explore the physics of sound and performance. Improvisation rather than notation is used to explore sound and play music. At the end of the workshop, the instructor will lead the participants in a performance of their newly discovered talents.

The initial workshop was held at Tokwawan Stories of House ( a community center) in the rapidly changing community of Tokwawan, Hong Kong. Participants were welcomed for all 3 days of the workshop, and engaged in various demonstrations of both analog and digital technology of making, modifying and improvising with sounds. After the workshop, there was a subsequent performance held with one of the participants at Floating Projects.

Study for Santur (ongoing)&#38;nbsp;
Santur, sitar and electronics
In collaboration with Pooyan Nassehpoor, Chen Pei-yuan, Pei-ling Huang and Sebastian Blàha

Study for Santur is an ongoing performance project that preserves classical Persian music (Radif), and specifically, improvisational music of the instrument with the same name. The santur, or the Persian dulcimer, is a trapezoidal string instrument that is in the Persian music repertoire and can be connected to similar instruments both in Europe as well as East Asia.Through computer music, as well as working with traditional players, the project is rooted in research and digital reproduction of the instrument that draws similarities to the oral traditions of how the instrument is passed down over time.
The piece was initially performed with players that ranged from computer programmers to ethnomusicologist who are connected to the instrument with their respective backgrounds. In this performance, each musician started by exploring their instrument, and through a slow build up, the frequencies of the traditional and electronic instruments met in the frequency range of the santur. Additionally, live sampling in the space rendered the attack, sustain and decay of the instruments into an indistinguishable drone.
Currently, the project approaches the previous knowledge of the instrument, while looking at the more personal aspect of how it is taught between instructor (Ostad) and pupil. Persian music is traditionally passed down in a method called “sineh be sineh”, or chest to chest. The project mimics this in the digital diaspora where Iranians are globally dispersed. In the past 6 months, laptop lessons over Skype between Milad Mozari (Chicago) and Pooyan Nassehpoor (Dusseldorf) were conducted. The two recently performed at the Hong Kong Art Centre, where Milad was present and Mr. Nassehpoor performed remotely from Dusseldorf. The project in this remote yet personal method of communication hopes to continue a creative channel for preservation of the music.

		<description>

The Iron Rod (2013)
Video: HDV, stereo sound, 14:31
Installation: Single channel HD projection, stereo sound, custom paint and car seat

The Iron Rod is a short film that takes its structure from an altered Mormon hymn and the Persian classical music system, the Radif.

Iron is considered a divine material in both Mormon and Muslim belief systems and is a metaphor for the word of God, representing prosperity and structural stability. Both of these cultures share a history of nomadism. This heritage of transience is juxtaposed by the symbol of ever present discipline and mobile social control, a heavy structural material.

The film opens beneath Chicago’s elevated railroad, an iron network of stationary architecture enabling physical journeys and forging social connections. The narrative presents a confluence of historical trajectories. Orality in religious and musical tradition is addressed through casual conversation and the implementation of musical structure (the Radif) and song (The Iron Rod). The transience of oral tradition is juxtaposed with the desire for structure as the taxi journeys with its occupants to an unknown destination, and the hymn evolves from definite words to abstract musical form.

After the vocalization of the hymn, the composition develops through a framework of three improvisations based on the Dastgah Mahur modal progressions within the Radif. Ornamentation and modulation eventually render the original unrecognizable. The surrounding space of the above ground trains accompany the taxi and its’ passengers. Playback on the taxi stereo while the rear passenger seat remains empty realizes another transformation, without a sound-producing subject.
